About the session:
Assessment is one of the most vital parts of patient care in all settings. It is practiced with almost every patient interaction and when interventions are performed. Astute assessment skills can impact patient outcomes through recognition of abnormalities and prompt reporting to practitioners.
This seminar is designed for all medical professionals wanting to improve their assessment skills. The anatomy and physiology of all systems is reviewed to provide insight into the physiological basis for normal and abnormal assessment findings.
The assessment parameters for various pathological disease states are reviewed to provide the health care professional with the knowledge to not only detect abnormalities but to also critically think and analyze the basis for signs and symptoms. Laboratory abnormalities and pharmacologic interventions are incorporated with the pathologic states. Case studies are used to enhance the assimilation of knowledge.
A review of the following is incorporated into this interactive seminar:
- Pain assessment
- Nutritional considerations
- Integumentary and lymphatic systems
- Musculoskeletal system
- Cardiovascular system
- Pulmonary system
- Abdominal assessment
- Gastrointestinal system
- Genitourinary system
- Neurological system
Objectives:
- State the principles of general assessment techniques, pain assessment, and nutritional considerations in health and disease states.
- Relate the assessment and monitoring parameters when dealing with disorders of the integumentary, lymphatic, and musculoskeletal systems.
- Verbalize the ability to complete a thorough cardiovascular assessment and correlate assessment parameters with various disorders.
- State the ability to distinguish between various pulmonary disorders based on assessment findings and clinical manifestations.
- Describe the assessment findings and clinical manifestations which correlate with common abdominal and genitourinary tract disorders.
- Verbalize the ability to conduct a complete neurological assessment and correlate abnormal findings with specific disease states.

About the session:
This forty-hour course is designed for any nurse wishing to complete a comprehensive intravenous therapy course. The course meets all the requirements of the Ohio Board of Nursing for Licensed Practical Nurses seeking authorization to perform IV therapy in the State of Ohio. The classroom instruction uses an extensive outline packet to facilitate learning and to serve as a resource for participants on completion of the course. The course is divided into eight modules with post-testing following the completion of each to evaluate learning. Case studies are used throughout the course to incorporate clinical application and critical thinking into the practice of IV therapy. Hands-on skill evaluations are made in the lab setting following instructor demonstration and practice. LPN participants will complete their three required venipunctures in a clinical setting with an instructor.
The course is coordinated by an experienced Master’s prepared and Board Certified clinician and educator. The Ohio Board of Nursing requires all LPN participants to have a medication card prior to the program and the clinical component.
Objectives:
- Outline the RN’s and LPN’s role, accountability and responsibility relative to IV therapy in terms of law, Board rule, role of the directing professional, healthcare setting and institutional policy.
- Identify the relationship between IV therapy and the body’s homeostatic functions, emphasizing the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
- Describe the various types of IV equipment, including criteria for use of each, and means of trouble-shooting for malfunction.
- Calculate infusion rates using standard formulas.
- Initiate IV therapy utilizing Phillip’s 15-step approach, while demonstrating knowledge prerequisite to initiation; i.e., patient and family support, universal precautions, anatomy and physiology of peripheral veins and procedural steps.
- Perform authorized IV therapy procedures as specified in law and Board rule.
- Outline local and systemic complications related to the administration of IV fluids and antibiotics in terms of signs and symptoms, management, and preventive measures.
Recent seminar comments:
“I enjoyed this program very much. Everything was presented in a very organized manner. It not only taught me about IV therapy but reinforced my learning in so many other areas. I feel extremely confident that I will be able to initiate IV therapy and administer IV medications with proper technique and knowledge.”
“The instructor was very knowledgeable in all areas of nursing. She was very effective in teaching, easy to understand very patient. Her commitment to exceptional patient care is an inspiration to the nursing profession.”
“Having this course will enhance my independence at work without having to get another nurse to do my IV medications and solutions. I will be able to help other RNs and LPNs on where to find new information and as a nurse manager at my facility to help with updating policies and procedures.”
“Thank you! I am very excited about receiving all this information and learning this new skill. I am always eager to learn more even at my age.”
This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the Ohio Nurses Association (OBN-001-91), an accredited approver by the American Nurse Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

About the session:
The goal of this full-day session is to enable the bedside professional to perform an interpretation of a 12-lead ECG and apply it to the clinical setting. Recognition of normal waves and a “quick and dirty” way to determine axis is presented. Bundle branch block patterns and hemiblocks are reviewed using 12-lead tracings.
Recognition of ischemia, injury and infarction is accomplished using a pathophysiologic approach to enhance understanding of the mechanism of the condition and then correlate it to the changes seen on the 12-lead. Chamber hypertrophy, electrolyte imbalances, and drug effects are also reviewed using patient assessment parameters and changes seen in the electrical system of the heart.
A review of the following is incorporated into this interactive seminar:
- Pain assessment
- Nutritional considerations
- Integumentary and lymphatic systems
- Musculoskeletal system
- Cardiovascular system
- Pulmonary system
- Abdominal assessment
- Gastrointestinal system
- Genitourinary system
- Neurological system
Objectives:
- Verbalize the ability to look at a 12-lead ECG and recognize normal waves and conduction.
- Identify intraventricular conduction delays which may be present on the 12-lead ECG.
- Describe the ECG changes and patterns seen in myocardial ischemia and infarction.
- Verbalize the ability to recognize ECG changes associated with chamber hypertrophy, electrolyte imbalances, and medications and other medical conditions.

“The instructor was very knowledgeable and knows how to deliver information so it is understandable and retainable. I have taken several ECG classes before…you made learning ECGs easier to understand!”
“Well developed course with excellent coverage of material. The instructor was exceptionally good at explaining concepts and making everything simple to understand and remember.”
“Not only will I be able to incorporate this into my daily practice, but I will be able to pass on my knowledge to other staff when asked for help with ECGs.”
“Well organized. Helpful, simple phrases to help with recall of information. It is finally nice to understand reading EKGs and IVCDs.”
“This was an excellent class and instructor! It really helped clarify how to read 12-leads and I learned lots of new things!! The clinical examples and correlation were excellent!! I can’t wait to go back to work and start looking at 12-leads!!”
“Excellent review which was presented in an easily understood manner. I now have the ability to decipher between active MI’s, non-STEMI, old MI’s, and bundle branch blocks. I have never had a solid grasp of this until now. Thank you!”
“I have a much better understanding of EKG interpretation and all the information which can be gained by evaluating them. I will now take a closer and systematic look at an EKG before turning it over to the provider.”
“Working on a cardiac unit, I will now be able to look more critically at the 12 lead and be more aware about what is going on with my patient with chest pain.”
