About the session:

Two days of instruction are devoted to the many situations health care professionals deal with which involves astute assessment skills and rapid collaborative interventions.  The pathophysiologic conditions covered are applicable to all personnel including emergency room, critical care, medical-surgical and extended care.

The seminar includes assessment components across the lifespan from pediatrics to geriatrics and also trauma patients.  Various conditions are covered using a physiologic approach to enhance assessment skills.  Etiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostics, and treatment aspects are covered.  Case studies are used to enhance learning.

Objectives:

• State the components of, and observations made, during the primary and secondary assessments used in the evaluation of acutely ill pediatric patients, adult patients, and trauma victims.
• Identify important components of airway management and clinical implications in caring for acute patients.
• Verbalize the physiology, causes, and clinical manifestations of respiratory failure.
• Verbalize the clinical manifestations and appropriate treatment for patients with a suspected pulmonary embolism.
• Verbalize the clinical manifestations and appropriate treatment for a patient with pulmonary edema.
• Verbalize the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease and the relationship to angina and myocardial infarction.
• State the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostics, and management of patients with myocardial ischemia and infarction.
• State the appropriate manifestations and treatment for disorders of the pericardium.
• Relate the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and diagnostic findings in the various classifications of heart failure.
• State the appropriate treatment modalities used in the management of heart failure.
• State the appropriate pharmacologic and electric treatment of specific types of dysrhythmias.
• Differentiate the major types of shock and state the causes, clinical manifestations, and treatment of each.
• Relate the clinical manifestations to the physiologic causes of altered cerebral perfusion.
• Discuss the clinical manifestations, treatment, complications, and interventions in brain attack victims.
• State the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and interventions utilized in spinal cord injured victims.
• State the clinical manifestations seen in burn victims and appropriate interventions.

Cynthia M. Liette, MS, APRN, ACNS-BC, CCRN

Ms. Liette has been a nurse for more than 35 years.  She has worked in a variety of clinical settings including intensive/ coronary care, emergency room, medical-surgical units, and supervision.  She currently works as a Clinical Nurse Specialist and Chief Clinical Officer in a rural health care system.  She has been an educator for practicing nurses, nursing students, and paramedics for more than 30 years while still maintaining a clinical practice.  Her numerous seminars consistently receive excellent reviews from all levels of health professionals.

She holds a Master’s Degree from Wright State University in the Clinical Nurse Specialist Adult Health track and is Board Certified as a CNS.
