About the session:
The goal of this full-day session is to enable the bedside professional to perform an interpretation of a 12-lead ECG and apply it to the clinical setting. Recognition of normal waves and a “quick and dirty” way to determine axis is presented. Bundle branch block patterns and hemiblocks are reviewed using 12-lead tracings.
Recognition of ischemia, injury and infarction is accomplished using a pathophysiologic approach to enhance understanding of the mechanism of the condition and then correlate it to the changes seen on the 12-lead. Chamber hypertrophy, electrolyte imbalances, and drug effects are also reviewed using patient assessment parameters and changes seen in the electrical system of the heart.
A review of the following is incorporated into this interactive seminar:
- Pain assessment
- Nutritional considerations
- Integumentary and lymphatic systems
- Musculoskeletal system
- Cardiovascular system
- Pulmonary system
- Abdominal assessment
- Gastrointestinal system
- Genitourinary system
- Neurological system
Objectives:
- Verbalize the ability to look at a 12-lead ECG and recognize normal waves and conduction.
- Identify intraventricular conduction delays which may be present on the 12-lead ECG.
- Describe the ECG changes and patterns seen in myocardial ischemia and infarction.
- Verbalize the ability to recognize ECG changes associated with chamber hypertrophy, electrolyte imbalances, and medications and other medical conditions.
Recent seminar comments:
“The information presented here will be used every day in the work setting. I now have a better understanding of ECGs and how they apply to my patients.”
“The instructor was very knowledgeable and knows how to deliver information so it is understandable and retainable. I have taken several ECG classes before…you made learning ECGs easier to understand!”
“Well developed course with excellent coverage of material. The instructor was exceptionally good at explaining concepts and making everything simple to understand and remember.”
“Not only will I be able to incorporate this into my daily practice, but I will be able to pass on my knowledge to other staff when asked for help with ECGs.”
“Well organized. Helpful, simple phrases to help with recall of information. It is finally nice to understand reading EKGs and IVCDs.”
“This was an excellent class and instructor! It really helped clarify how to read 12-leads and I learned lots of new things!! The clinical examples and correlation were excellent!! I can’t wait to go back to work and start looking at 12-leads!!”
“Excellent review which was presented in an easily understood manner. I now have the ability to decipher between active MI’s, non-STEMI, old MI’s, and bundle branch blocks. I have never had a solid grasp of this until now. Thank you!”
“I have a much better understanding of EKG interpretation and all the information which can be gained by evaluating them. I will now take a closer and systematic look at an EKG before turning it over to the provider.”
“Working on a cardiac unit, I will now be able to look more critically at the 12 lead and be more aware about what is going on with my patient with chest pain.”
