About the session

This seminar is designed for healthcare clinicians who want to further their knowledge of caring for the patient with a wound. The anatomy and physiology of the integumentary system, aspects of comprehensive wound assessment and acute and chronic wounds will be reviewed.

Chronic wounds, which come from underlying disease, are often the most difficult for the bedside clinician to evaluate. The common and uncommon pathological disease states will be reviewed to provide the clinician with the knowledge to recognize the etiology of the wound and to analyze the assessment data to provide effective care leading to wound healing. A holistic approach to assessment and care of the wound patient is demonstrated throughout the seminar. Case studies are used to enhance the assimilation of knowledge.

A review of the following is incorporated into this interactive seminar:

v  Wound assessment

v  Pressure ulcers

v  Lower extremity wounds

v  Skin tears

v  Incontinence associated dermatitis

v  Current treatments in wound care

v  Factors that impede wound healing

Objectives:

• Verbalize the ability to complete a thorough holistic wound assessment including pain, psychosocial and nutritional assessments.
• Correlate assessment parameters with various disease processes leading to wounds.
• State the ability to distinguish between the different wound care dressing categories and link indications for each category.
• Describe the four phases of wound healing and the impact of each phase on healing.
• Describe the stages of pressure ulcers and interventions utilized to improve them.
• State the ability to distinguish between common lower extremity wounds based on assessment findings, clinical manifestations and interventions to promote healing.
• Verbalize the ability to assess skin tears and initiate interventions to promote healing.
• Describe assessment findings consistent with incontinence associated dermatitis and interventions to improve skin integrity.
• Correlate the principles of wound care to the external and internal factors that impede healing.

Your Instructor

Michelle Ashman, MSN, APRN, NP-C, CWOCN

Ms. Ashman has been a nurse for more than 13 years.  She has worked in a variety of clinical settings including out-patient disease management clinic, wound clinic, medical-surgical units, home health and long term care.  She currently works as a Nurse Practitioner in a rural health care system.  She has had an integral role in the development and success of a rural outpatient wound center.   Ms. Ashman has taught several classes in wound assessment and management and serves as a preceptor for nurses who are in WOC school.

She holds a Master’s Degree from Wright State University in the Family Nurse Practitioner track and is Board Certified as a Nurse Practitioner.  She attended the R.B. Turnbull, Jr., M.D. WOC Nursing Education Program at Cleveland Clinic in 2007 and is certified as a wound ostomy continence nurse by the WOCNCB.

She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau – National Nursing Honor Society, American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Wound Ostomy & Continence Society, Ohio Association of Advanced Practice Nurses and the Council for Ohio Health Care Advocacy.
