About the session:
Two full days of instruction provide an in-depth clinical understanding of many of the procedures performed on critically ill patients.
Rapid sequence intubation and mechanical ventilation are reviewed in detail including the indications and types of devices used, complications and nursing implications. In addition, arterial lines, central lines, pacemakers, dialysis and implantable cardioverter defibrillators are covered.
Principles behind evidenced-based protocols for sepsis, diabetic ketoacidosis and inducted hypothermia are reviewed. A beginning understanding of multisystem organ dysfunction is presented with a review of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), hepatic and renal failure, pancreatitis, myocardial depression, and cerebral dysfunction.
Objectives:
- State the measurements and implications associated with various hemodynamic parameters.
- State the indications for direct arterial monitoring, the principles of catheter placement and use, and potential complications.
- Explain the indications for mechanical ventilation, types of ventilators and settings used, and noninvasive alternatives to intubation.
- Describe the assessment parameters and nursing care aspects to be followed in caring for a ventilated patient.
- Describe the potential complications associated with ventilator patients, recognition of clinical signs, and management of complications.
- State the nursing management principles of a patient receiving intravenous therapy via a central line.
- Describe the general indications for pacemakers and the types and settings that can be used.
- State the nursing implications during insertion and care of the patient with a temporary or permanent pacemaker.
- State the types of permanent pacemakers used and methods to evaluate function and detect complications.
- Describe the uses of an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, the function of the unit, and the nursing care aspects of patients with an ICD.
